When you look into the cellar of your home, the last thing you expect to see is a horse, of course.
One Fair Grove homeowner was surprised to find their horse fell into their cellar and needed the help of neighbors, a crew from the Fair Grove Fire Department, and others to save it.
The 34-year-old horse, named “Poco Rose”, had apparently been grazing in the family’s yard when it walked across the house’s porch and the cellar door was unable to hold the horse’s weight.
The Fair Grove fire department crew realized they were going to need assistance to save the horse, and called a vet from Fair Grove Veterinary Service to assist in the best methods for saving the horse. The Springfield Fire Department’s technical rescue team was also called for assistance.
The department said the challenges included the porch pillars not being wide enough to allow machinery to access the space, the horse weighing an estimated 1200 pounds, and being half in the cellar requiring the horse to be rotated and lifted at the same time.
After several attempts that did not save the horse, the crews reached out to Henry’s Towing and Wrecker Service, who had a “rotator” truck with an extendable boom that could reach into the cellar. With the help of the truck, straps, and ropes, those involved were able to save the horse.
As soon as the crews removed the straps from the horse, it got up and began walking around the yard. The vet said that other than bumps and bruises the horse appears to be fine.
