Family Vacation to Washington D.C. didn't disappoint.

30 States (and Counting): Our Family’s Budget-Friendly Travel Adventures

Summary

This blog post shares a family's journey to visit all 50 states with their kids before graduation, highlighting how their travel style has evolved over time. It features three favorite, budget-friendly destinations—Washington D.C., Florida’s 30A area, and Durango, Colorado—each offering unique experiences for families. The post emphasizes that memorable trips don’t have to be expensive, and sometimes the simplest adventures create the best memories.

Many years ago, my husband and I set a goal: visit every state with our kids before they graduate high school. Life got busy—as it tends to do—and while we’ve fallen a bit behind, we’ve managed to explore 30 states (and counting) as a family.

Gone are the days of planning around nap times and diaper bags. Now our travel companions are teens who want to stay up late and find the best local food. Our adventures have taken us from Disneyland to New York City, and along the way, we’ve discovered some amazing, budget-friendly destinations that we highly recommend.

Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Washington, D.C.

This one tops my list. As a fan of American history, there’s nothing like seeing the monuments, museums, and landmarks in person. Even better? Most of the museums and attractions are free! That’s a huge win for families.

We have one history-loving kid and another who couldn’t care less about what happened yesterday—but both enjoyed D.C. There’s something for everyone in this vibrant, walkable city.

Calm waters in Seaside, Florida make it a great day for families with young kids.

2. Destin / Seaside / 30A, Florida

If you’re looking for crystal blue water and powder-sugar sand, this area of Florida delivers in a big way. Many days, the waves are so calm, even the littlest beachgoers can enjoy the water.

In my opinion, these beaches rival some of the best tropical destinations—and my kids would agree. This is their favorite vacation spot, hands down.

3. Durango, Colorado

Okay, full disclosure: my husband was coaching a football game while the kids and I snuck away to Durango for a weekend. And it was gorgeous. The aspens were at peak color, and it’s honestly one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen.

The town had amazing parks and lots of outdoor activities perfect for kids. We’re definitely planning a return trip—with my husband this time!

We’ve been fortunate to take some incredible trips, but I’ve learned that it’s often the simple getaways that leave the biggest mark on our kids.

Don’t feel pressured to spend a fortune on fancy vacations. Sometimes, a county fair or a weekend road trip will be the memory they talk about for years. (My kids are living proof!)
